Day 5: How to Drink the Raw Vegan Kool-Aid (Step 3)

In Steps 1 and 2, you learned to fear meat and processed food.  Where does that leave us?

Step 3:  Watch Some Raw Vegan Propaganda

My friend Caleb Jennings of Young and Raw got me thinking about raw veganism again last year … My friend Roger Haeske of How to Go Raw introduced me to the idea way back in 2005 and it never really stuck despite Roger’s valiant efforts.  When staying at my house for a week in 2011 Caleb showed me a picture of raw vegan actor/model Marcus Patrick.

I thought “OK, this dude is jacked.  And he’s a raw vegan?  This has to be a fluke.”  But Caleb and Roger are both extremely fit and superb athletes as well …

Some folks I know who are purveyors of tools related to the metabolic typing diet corroborated my skepticism.  They said Caleb, Roger, Marcus and others like them are only able to remain fit on the raw vegan diet because they are the type that responds well to a vegan diet.

The logic here is that we all have different genetic heritages that adapted over thousands of years to eat specific types of foods.   Change your diet to match your metabolic type and …  poof! – you’ll be superhuman in no time.  (So sayeth the metabolic typing propaganda.)

I took a metabolic typing test (consisting only of questions – no blood drawn or anything like that)  and it told me that I should be eating pretty close to the high-protein Paleo diet I was already on.

I allowed that theory to dominate my thinking until the fall of 2011.  I got injured pretty bad in MMA training and started putting on some weight because I wasn’t training as hard.  The weight gain and the slow recovery from my injury got me looking at raw veganism again.  My search led me to these videos of raw vegan bodybuilders.

“Hmmm … maybe there’s something to this raw vegan business after all?”   So, I started playing around with “gourmet raw vegan” eating.  This is basically an “anything as long as it’s raw” approach to diet.  You can eat tasty gourmet delights using any combination of raw vegan ingredients and …  - poof! – you’ll be superhuman in no time.  (I’m seeing a trend in this diet propaganda …)

What I discovered next had me thinking it’s not that simple, and this I shall reveal to you in Step 4.

Here’s what happened on Day 4:

Breakfast

Cleansing drink of beets, apples, and lemon

Lunch

Half a large watermelon

Dinner

Half a large watermelon.

At a Korean restaurant with friends:  some raw vegan “banchan” (반찬) consisting of  sprouts, kimchi, radish, etc …

Diet Plan

80/10/10 Raw Vegan (modified slightly)

Supplements

Green Vibrance

Exercise

Bowling (it was a recovery day – cut me some slack)

Notes

I was jonesing for some meat pretty bad last night and felt pretty horrible.  Maybe I was “detoxing” … who knows.   I did not succumb to the temptation to drive to Five Guys for a heart-attack-special.  Today I am feeling much better.
